Voice

Education: Coltyn has been offering singing lessons in Milwaukee since 2016, with extensive performance experience both locally and internationally since 2011. He performs regularly as a soloist, directs and performs in musicals, leads worship at St. Marcus Lutheran Church, directs local choirs, and narrates audiobooks for Audible. With a degree in music education from Wisconsin Lutheran College, he teaches students aged 4 to 95 in Pop, Rock, Musical Theater, Metal, Worship, and any other contemporary styles.

I believe music is an artform and therefore does not have any “right” or “wrong” approach. I work with students to discover and perfect their art, notwithstanding my personal preferences. My first and primary focus with any student is control of their voice, which I approach as one would a machine they are trying to learn to operate. We learn singing in the order in which the processes happen, starting with the mental side, and working through posture, breathing, phonation, resonance, articulation and finally communication before advancing to a more complex version of each category. Once control is achieved, the goal is to find one’s ideal and personalized sound as well as learn performance and emotional expression. All of this being said, I individualize each students’ lessons as I get to know them so the whole process is adjusted for each student. My other fundamental beliefs on teaching are honesty and “play.” Honesty being I will never lie to a student about what I hear, good or bad, and “play” being that art should be for enrichment and fun, not a work obligation. For this reason, I encourage treating music as something you do because you love it, whether it’s just a fun side hobby or if it’s your full time job.
